The Port of Brisbane is the city's primary sea port, providing for the importing and exporting of a range of commodities. It is serviced by a dedicated dual gauge (3' 6" and 4' 8.5") railway line which joins the Cleveland Line at Lytton Junction near Lindum. The port sees regular container, coal and grain trains.

Mayne Yard is the primary location for the storage and maintenance of Queensland Rail's suburban and interurban electric multiple unit fleet. It has been subject to revision as a result of the construction of Cross River Rail, including removal of part of the yard and development of a new stabling facility on the old marshalling yard, north of the Ferny Grove line.

Roma Street represents the primary terminus and interchange point for a range of rail services operating in Queensland. Along with Central Station it is one of two stations located in the Brisbane CBD and is serviced by all lines in the Brisbane suburban and interurban network. Meanwhile all Queensland Rail Travel services originating in Brisbane depart from Roma Street in addition to the XPT Service to Sydney operated by NSW Trainlink. The station also allows interchanging to Brisbane bus services through dedicated busway platforms (P1 and P2).

Acacia Ridge is the largest and most strategically important railway yard in Brisbane. The facility supports the interchanging of containers and steel products between trains or to/from trucks. Acacia Ridge is the yard from which Aurizon/Linfox North Coast Line services are operated and all standard gauge freight services, other that those operated from Bromelton by SCT.

Moolabin is the Brisbane base for Pacific National's container operations along the North Coast Line to Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. The facility can be accessed by rail traffic from the Tennyson Line, with freight services using either the Ipswich Line (via Milton) or Beenleigh Line (via South Brisbane) to arrive from the north.

SCT's facility at Bromelton provides for the interchanging of containers between trucks and trains. The facility is located adjacent to the standard gauge Brisbane to Sydney line, with SCT operating regular container services between Bromelton and Melbourne.

Teys Australia's facility at Beenleigh is one of two meatworks in South East Queensland serviced by rail. Often referred to as "Holmview", due to where cattle unloading occurs on the rail network, the meatworks sees freight trains using the Beenleigh Line. Watco Australia currently services the meatworks with trains arriving from the north and west.

Wacol provides a small yard facility which is used by Queensland Rail for infrastructure trains. The yard extends to the north and south of Wacol Station Road, creating a four track level crossing, with the yard tracks to the east of the mainline and Wacol Station.

Originally developed as QR's Redbank Workshops in the late 1950s, this facility has been responsible for carrying out extensive maintenance works for QR and later Aurizon, who became responsible for the facility after the split of QR's freight business and ultimately its privitisation. Aurizon has subsequently entered into a commercial arrangement for Progress Rail to use the workshops for maintenance and larger rebuild projects. Whilst Aurizon is a major customer for Progress Rail, servicing of Queensland Rail and Pacific National Locomotives, along with Progress Rail's own fleet of lease locomotives, occurs at Redbank. The Super Clyde program, which resulted in the creation of the 2700, 2900 and PRL classes locomotive, was completed at Redbank.

JBS Dinmore is one of two meatworks in South East Queensland serviced by rail. Unloading occurs on a dedicated siding near Dinmore Station. Watco Australia currently services the meatworks with trains arriving from the north and west.

North Ipswich was the original location for Queensland Railway's primary workshop. The development of Redbank in the late 1950s left the workshops relatively vacant and in 2002 The Workshops Railway Museum opened within the grounds, utilising much of the old workshop space. Maintenance and stabling of Queensland Rail rollingstock still occurs, with North Ipswich being the home of Queensland Rail's heritage fleet.

As part of the delivery of the New Generation Rollingstock (NGR), a dedicated maintenance facility was constructed at Wulkuraka. It is accessed from the mainline between Wulkuraka and Karrabin Stations.













Downer Rail's factory at Maryborough, formerly known as Walkers Maryborough, is a primary railway manufacturing facility in Queensland, having been responsible for many key classes of locomotive and rollingstock including most of the suburban/interurban fleet, GT42CU AC (4000 and PN classes) and GT42CU ACe (GWN / ORN / 83 / PRQ / ORQ classes) locomotives and both the diesel and electric tilt train fleets. Downer also regularly provides maintenance services to rail operators, including refurbishment programs.

The Torbanlea Train Manufacturing Facility is currently under construction and will support the delivery of the next generation of multiple unit passenger rollingstock for Queensland Rail's suburban and interurban network in South East Queensland.

Callide Coal Mine, located near Biloela, is one of two major coal mines serviced by the Moura Line, which exports through Gladstone. The Callide Mine also supplies the nearby power stations, Callide A, Callide B and Callide C.

Dawson Coal Mine is located near the town of Moura and is one of two major coal mines serviced by the Moura Line, which exports through Gladstone.




















Queensland Rail maintains a depot at Gracemere which is primarily used for servicing of the Electric Tilt Train.

Aurizon has a small depot at Stanwell which provides for the stabling of trains in two loops, one on each of the main tracks.

Stanwell Power Station is serviced by a balloon loop, allowing coal to be delivered directly to the power station from mines in the Blackwater System.

Bluff provides a large yard facility and Aurizon depot for the stabling of coal trains. The complex also comprises Bluff Station serviced by the Spirit of the Outback.

Coal loading for the Jellinbah Mine is undertaken at Boonal parallel to the main line. A balloon loop is provided at Boonal to turn trains.

Blackwater is a major centre for the coal mining operations in Central Queensland, with a number of mine branch lines extending north and south of Blackwater. The railway complex at Blackwater includes a yard and the railway station.

Koorilgah Coal Mine is serviced by a short branch line extending south from Blackwater. The mine loads from a dedicated balloon loop at the end of the branch line.

Curragh Coal Mine is located to the north-west of Blackwater and is accessed by a short branch line which joins the Central Line just west of Blackwater. The mine is serviced by a balloon loop at the end of the branch line.

The Whitehaven Coal Blackwater Mine is serviced by two loading locations accessed from the Rolleston branch line that runs to the south-west of Blackwater. The northern loading location is known as Borgoon and comprises a dedicated balloon loop to the west of the mine.

The Whitehaven Coal Blackwater Mine is serviced by two loading locations accessed from the Rolleston branch line that runs to the south-west of Blackwater. The southern loading location is known as Kinrola and comprises a dedicated balloon loop forming part of the broader mine complex.

The Rolleston Coal Mine is located to the west of Rolleston township and serviced by a dedicated 107 kilometre branch line running from the Central Line, south-west of Blackwater.

Ensham Coal Mine is one of three mines serviced by a branch line to the north-west of Blackwater, which also provides a connection to the Newlands system. Ensham is provided with its own dedicated 13 kilometre line connecting into this branch line 20 kilometres north of the Central Line.

Kestrel Coal Mine is one of three mines serviced by a branch line to the north-west of Blackwater, which also provides a connection to the Newlands system. Loading occurs at Gordonstone adjacent to the northern part of the mine.

Gregory Coal Mine is one of three mines serviced by a branch line to the north-west of Blackwater, which also provides a connection to the Newlands system. The mine is located 66 kilometres north of the Central Line and serviced by a dedicated balloon loop. The connection to the Newlands system is located just to the south of the mine.

Emerald is an important town in Central Queensland and serves as a key junction in the railway network. Emerald Station is a major stop for the Spirit of the Outback while the adjoining yard supports the stabling of various trains. Watco has also established an operations base to the west of the station.

Capella provides a key loading point for grain trains in Central Queensland. The Clermont Line remains operational between Emerald and Capella to allow these trains to access the grain loader before joining the Central Line.

Longreach is the terminus of the Spirit of the Outback, the only passenger train on the Central Line. The station also supports a small yard and freight facility which is used by Aurizon for their weekly container service to Rockhampton.

Aussie Outback Tours has established a small facility to the west of Longreach Station to house and service their leased 2000 Class Railmotor.

Winton is the terminus of the Central Line. It currently supports limited freight movements to and from Longreach.

Dalrymple Bay is one of two export coal terminals in the Goonyella system. The terminal is a common user facility, owned by the Queensland Government and operated by Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd. It comprises a triple track balloon loop to unload trains.

Hay Point is one of two export coal terminals in the Goonyella system. The terminal is operated by BMA and comprises a dual track balloon loop to unload trains.

Jilalan is Aurizon's primary yard and servicing facility in the Goonyella system. The yard also accommodates stored locomotives and rollingstock.

Yukan is located within the section of the Goonyella system that runs parallel with the North Coast Line and provides the only two linkages between the systems, north and south of Yukan Yard. Yukan mainly supports rail infrastructure operations.

Nebo Yard is located to the south of Nebo township and accommodates a major servicing and storage facility for Pacific National. The facility is located adjacent to the main line between Coppabella and the coast. Waitara Yard is located to the east of Nebo Yard and provides additional facilities.

Hail Creek Coal Mine is one of three mines located to the east of Coppabella and accessed directly from the main line. Hail Creek is provided its own branch line, which is shared for a short distance wit traffic from the South Walker Coal Mine. Loading occurs from a dedicated balloon loop.

South Walker Coal Mine is one of three mines located to the east of Coppabella and accessed directly from the main line. Traffic to the mine uses the Hail Creek branch line for a short distance to access a dedicated balloon loop.

Macarthur Coal Mine is one of three mines located to the east of Coppabella and accessed directly from the main line. A short branch line provides access to the mine's dedicated balloon loop.

Coppabella serves as a major junction on the Goonyella system. Beyond Coppabella the system begins to branch off to service different mines surrounding Moranbah. Coppabella yard provides a key location for the stabling of coal trains.

Moorvale Coal Mine is located south of Coppabella and the most northerly mine serviced by from the Coppabella to Gregory line. Loading is undertaken from a balloon loop located on a short branchline.

The Millennium Balloon Loop is accessible from the Coppabella to Gregory line. It provides loading for the Millennium Coal Mine, Poitrel Coal Mine and Daunia Coal Mine.

Peak Downs Coal Mine is one of the largest mines in the Goonyella system. It is located to the south of Moranbah and is serviced from the Coppabella to Gregory line via a dedicated balloon loop. Stabling tracks are also provided for the mine.





Moranbah North Coal Mine is located in the northern part of the system and accessed from the Wotonga to Newlands line. The mine is located approximately 20 kilometres north of Moranbah township and is serviced by a dedicated balloon loop.

Goonyella Riverside Coal Mine is one of the largest mines in the system and is supported by three separate loading points. The Goonyella load point is the southern most load point and is formed by a balloon loop located adjacent to the Wotonga to Newlands line.

Goonyella Riverside Coal Mine is one of the largest mines in the system and is supported by three separate loading points. The North Goonyella load point is to the northernmost load point and provides a balloon loop accessed by a short branch line from the Wotonga to Newlands line.









Cloncurry Yard provides a vital point for the Mount Isa system, allowing the marshalling of mixed trains that travel to the east, comprised of separate loadings from Phosphate Hill and Mount Isa. In the modern Queensland railways landscape this is quite rare, with a preference for single commodity loading.








The Yabulu Nickel Refinery was operated by Queensland Nickel and serviced by a balloon loop from the North Coast Line. The refinery ceased operations in 2016 and whilst discussions have occurred about reopening the facility, it remains closed.

Both Pacific National and Linfox undertake local loading and unloading of containers on their daily Brisbane to Cairns freight services at the yard to the south of Innisfail Station. These loadings / unloadings occur on an as needed basis and involve the shunting of wagons to/from the sidings in the yard.

Woree is Pacific National's yard in the Cairns area and provides the terminus for their daily freight services between Brisbane and Cairns (xCP1 and x7P2).

Portsmith Yard is located in the southern suburbs of Cairns and is the primary railway yard in the city. It supports Linfox's intermodal operations along with Queensland Rail's passneger services, both the Spirti of Queensland and the Kuranda Scenic Railway. The Spirit of Queensland and Kuranda services will run empty to and from this yard (Kuranda daily train numbers 4K30, 4K32, 4C61, 4C65)

Cairns North is a small railway complex used by Cairns Rail. It houses Cairns Rail's fleet of 11 class diesel locomotives, the 2000 class railmotors used for the Savannahlander and a number of other heritage rollingstock items (such as SX cars).
